Tris-HCl buffer is one of the most widely used buffer systems in life-science research. It serves as a solvent for nucleic acids and proteins and is applied for protein crystal growth under varied pH conditions. It is also a key component in protein electrophoresis buffers and an indispensable constituent for SDS-PAGE and Western blot assays in protein research. Thanks to its low-ionic-strength property, Tris-HCl buffer supports the formation of intermediate filaments of C. elegans nuclear lamin. In molecular biology experiments, Tris-HCl acts as a basal buffer for nucleic acid electrophoresis, PCR and molecular cloning. Beyond biological experiments, Tris-HCl is an intermediate for manufacturing surfactants, vulcanization accelerators and certain pharmaceuticals.
