Originally recommend for growth of embryonic mouse cells and propagation of polyoma virus in hamster cells, DMEM is today one the most universally utilized culture media. The original formulation contained 1000 mg/L glucose (refered to today as low glucose) but an increased concentration to 4500 mg/L (high glucose) has proven beneficial for growth of several cell lines.
